Four Ways to Keep Track of Your Belongings When Packing

When the movers come to take all of your furniture and boxes to your new house or apartment, there will be a flurry of activity. As you rush to get boxes packed or have the Winnipeg movers do the packing for you, it is easy to lose track of what is in the boxes. These four methods of keeping track of your belongings while packing will help you to know which things are in each box. This will make the unpacking process go more smoothly.

1. Take a Digital Photo of Each Box

A fast and simple way to keep track of what is in each box you pack is to take a digital photo of the box. If possible, take two photos. The first photo should be the box's exterior, which should have a number on it. "Kitchen 1/10" shows that the box is the first of ten for items that belong in the kitchen. The second photo should show the contents of the box before it is taped and sealed shut.

2. Make a Spreadsheet of Each Box's Contents

If you would like to have a more detailed list of what is in every box, make a spreadsheet as you do your packing. For example, you could have a digital spreadsheet showing the room where the box goes, which box it is and what is inside of it. Your spreadsheet could be used to keep track of a large number of items, such as a big collection of porcelain figurines or holiday decorations. If you keep those items stored most of the time, the spreadsheet will also come in handy after you have moved into your new place.

3. Create a Written Inventory in a Notebook

Some people prefer to have an inventory in a notebook instead of on a computer. If you write everything on paper, you could also scan your lists to have a digital backup copy. Each page in a notebook could be an inventory of what is in each box. If only a few items are in a box, you could fit the inventory of multiple boxes on a single page.

4. Record a Video of What Is in Every Bin

Another way to keep track of what is being packed into each bin is to take a recording and make a video. This video could also be useful for insurance purposes, especially if you have valuable items or collectibles in your bins. You could narrate the video as you go along, starting and stopping it when you begin and finish packing each of the bins or boxes.
